Cricket

Interest in cricket and soccer both grew almost equally after World War II. Whereas T&T began to field its own soccer team in international competition after Independence from Great Britain in 1962, international cricket competition remained a combined West Indian effort through the turn of the 20th century. Today, both cricket and soccer remain by far the most popular sports in the country.

International

The West Indies (W.I.) cricket team represents the islands of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados, current and former British colonies in the Windward Islands (St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada) and the Leeward Islands (Antigua, Dominica, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla), and Guyana in South America. (Guyana was known as British Guiana before its independence in 1966.) The W.I. began international play in 1928 when a 3-game Test series was played in England from June to August. Between 1928 and 1992, international competition for the W.I. team included Test Matches against England, Australia, India, Pakistan, and New Zealand. During this period, South Africa had a representative team but, because of its apartheid policy, only competed against the "White countries" which excluded the predominantly Black W.I. team. Beginning in 1992, international competition for W.I. was expanded to include South Africa (1992), Sri Lanka (1997), Zimbabwe (2000), and Bangladesh (2002).

Between June 23, 1928, and February 13, 2019, a total of 66 cricketers who represented Trinidad & Tobago were selected to play Test cricket for the West Indies. These players filled 1,103 out of a possible 5,973 slots (18.47%) in the 543 Test Matches that were played during the period. The following is a summary of the results of all Test Matches played by W.I. between 1928 and 2019. Test Matches involving "A" teams were not included in the statistics.
