National Indian Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago was founded by its musical director, Harry Mahabir. Mahabir had demonstrated a love for when he was 15 years old and joined the Naya Zamana Orchestra which was led by the Oustad Nazir Mohammed from whom he received some of his early training. From 1965 to 1967 Harry was in India on a scholarship to study Indian music. In 1972 he was awarded the Hummingbird Silver Medal for music. He has played background music in several films, including the movie "Ram Aur Shyam," while in India.
