TRIPOLIANS

The Tripolians was founded in 1971 in St. James, Port of Spain, with John Babb as its first manager and Emmanuel Camps as its first captain. The band was an instant success on the road with Mary Ann (Roaring Lion) and Drunk and Disorderly (Mighty Sparrow). In 1972, it obtained the sponsorship of Vat 19 rum distillers. Tripolians' success was very instrumental in keeping alive the single-pan concept that existed up until the mid-1950s. In 1975, the band won the first Panorama competition that was created for single-pan bands, better known as "pan-round-the-neck." In 2011, there were over 60 single-pan bands in existence throughout Trinidad & Tobago. In 2011, its manager was Keith Simpson. Tripolians finished among the top three steelbands in the following significant competition:
