CAREER: Ames made his debut as a professional golfer in 1987 and played on the Nike Tour until 1992. From 1993 until 1997, he played on the European Tour. During this time, he migrated to Canada in 1994. His years of toil and close calls finally paid off when he captured his first Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA) Tour title in July 2004 at the Cialis Western Open in Illinois, USA. He finished in the top three in the following significant PGA tournaments:
- 1991 - Pensacola Open (1st)
- 1994 - Lyon Open (1st)
- 1996 - Benson & Hedges Open (1st)
- 2002 (March 21 - 24) - The Players Championship, TPC at Sawgrass - Stadium Course, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA (2nd, 282, -6)
- 2004 (May 20 - 23) - Bank of America Colonial, Colonial Country Club Course, Fort Worth, Texas, USA (3rd, 271, -9)
- 2004 (July 1 - 4) - Cialis Western Open, Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Lemont, Illinois, USA (1st, 274, -14))
