ROY   CAPE

  • CAREER:                                 Cape is an accomplished saxophonist who also played the clarinet and steel pan. He began playing with many bands such as Clarence Curvan and Sparrow Troubadors in the 1960s. As a member of the Troubadors, he accompanied the Mighty Sparrow from the 1960s into the 1970s and travelled with him to several countries including Grenada, St Lucia, Bermuda, St. Croix, St. Martin, Canada (Toronto), USA (New York), Sweden, Germany, and Denmark. In addition to accompanying the Mighty Sparrow, Cape travelled with calysonians such as Lord Superior and Lord Brynner as early as 1961 and later, Black Stalin. He played at the Spectacular calypso tent and formed his band, Roy Cape Kaiso All Stars, in 1980. He retired from playing in 2015 to receive treatment prostate cancer and founded the Roy Cape Foundation in June 2017 to focus on acquiring musical equipment for music programs in Trinidad & Tobago, and to mentor the young musicians at facilities such as the Youth Training Center, St Michael’s School for Boys, St. Mary’s Home, and St. Dominic’s Home.
