CAREER: In the early-1960s, Kellman was a member of the Southern Marines Steel Orchestra which was founded by Milton "Squeezer" Lyons and his brothers. He was also an excellent tenor-pan player and was a member of the Trinidad and Tobago National Steelband that performed at Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada. With Lyons tuning their pans, the Southern Marines were well-recognized in Trinidad for their sound and this created an opportunity for a young Kellman to develop his pan-tuning skills working with Lyons. Kellman would go on to become one of the finest steelpan tuners of all time. In addition to his outstanding tuning talents, Kellman was a musical arranger for Southern Marines in the 1970s and also worked as a disc jockey. |
